GKIDS announced on Monday that it’s going to collaborate with Shout! Factory to release the film Giovannis Islandon Blu-ray and digitally on February 21, 2023.
The film was first released in 2014, and produced by Production I.G. It is directed by Mizuho Nishikubo, and features a screenplay by Shigemichi Sugita and Yoshiki Sakurai. Following the release, Giovannis Island won the Jury Distinction Prize at the 38th Annecy International Animated Film Festival, as well as the Best Animated Film at the 69th annual Mainichi Film Awards in 2015.

The couple Junpei and Kanta live in Shikotan, a tiny fishing island spared from World War II, read the official synopsis for this film. The children are named after Giovanni and Campanella from the old mother’s favorite book Night on the Galactic Railroad, which rekindled with the Japanese defeat. Junpei meets Tanya, the daughter of a commander when Soviet troops arrive with their families to settle on the island. The child, despite their language barriers and growing frustration, soon became a unlikely friendship.
The island of Giovannis will be available digitally and on Blu-ray on February 21, 2023.
