When’s Smiley Releasing? The next Spanish Queer Rom-Com: From there!

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Spanish queer rom-com series, Smiley.

Smiley is a Spanish romantic comedy series that is adapted from the same name of a theatre play by the actress, Guillem Clua. It’s the same name as the television host. This series is produced by Marta Pahissa and David M. Porras and is produced by Minoria Absoluta for Netflix.

The play started in 2012 in a small theatre in Barcelona and then became more and more commercial symphony, and ran for many seasons until 2015, when the production opened in two theatres. This play has been translated in a few languages so far it can be heard in countries like Germany, Italy and more.

The cast of the series include Miki Esparbe (The Innocent, The Night, The Legend of the Night), Bruno, Carlos Cuevas (Who Did It To My Father) as Alex, Pepon Nieto, Meritxell Calvo, Giannina Fruttero, Eduardo Lloveras, Ruth Llopis and Ramon Pujol.

Smiley Plot/Synopsis.

The official Netflix synopsis of the series reads, Two men and their friends navigate anxiety, hangups and missed friendships while they seek to find true love they had been missing.

The story follows Alex, who is heartbroken. He created fantasies with a boy who disappeared for a couple of weeks, giving him a perfect ghosting of things. He really regrets it. He picks up the phone and asks for a voicemail explanation that has unexpected consequences since he finally writes it to Bruno, who he doesn’t know at all. This innocent mislead is the first one of a chain of events that will forever change Alex and Bruno’s life.

In the trailer we see that the two strangers end up meeting each other and even dating, but their conflicting personalities become a tie-breaker. Now no matter the number of differences, they have actually been in love with each other. However, can they give a new opportunity, or decide to go separate ways, is to look out for it?
